És un dels grans saltamartins europeus. Els mascles tenen entre 30 i 55 mm de longitud i les femelles de 65 a 70 mm. El cap i el protòrax són robustos, els ulls tenen ratlles verticals blanques i negres, les antenes  són curtes i fortes. El color del cos varia del gris al marró. El pronot té una ratlla taronja en el dors. És una espècie solitària.

It is one of the great European grasshoppers. Males are between 30 and 55 mm in length and females between 65 and 70 mm. The head and prothorax (front section of the body) are robust, the eyes have vertical black and white stripes, the antennae are short and strong. The body colour varies from grey to brown. The pronotum (dorsal exoskeletal plate) has an orange stripe on the back. It is a solitary species.

Es uno de los grandes saltamontes europeos. Los machos tienen entre 30 y 55 mm de longitud y las hembras de 65 a 70 mm. La cabeza y el protórax son robustos, los ojos tienen rayas verticales blancas y negras, las antenas  son cortas y fuertes. El color del cuerpo varía del gris al marrón. El pronoto tiene una raya naranja en el dorso. Es una especie solitaria.
